What Are True Necessities?

Food.  Clothing.  Shelter. Sure, I’ll concede that these are “necessities.”  For most of our modern world, at least for anyone with the capability to read this, they are. But another, even more basic necessity often goes unconsidered.  Yet this one true essential holds the key to not only life, but enlightenment. I’m talking about breath. Just consider it.  However unpleasant, you could survive without shelter.  And by shelter, I’m calling to mind some kind of lodging, say a house or apartment.  In a temperate climate, some kind of temporary structure would suffice in more extreme weather. Clothing.  Well, that’s something [...]

In a previous article, you set about calming the body and becoming aware of your tendencies to move around unconsciously. You sat, starting for two minutes in total stillness, starting again and again upon each movement. You continued this rigorous practice until you could observe the urge to move before you moved. And you became proficient at allowing the urge to pass. Now you are at the point where you can sit indefinitely in stillness. If you’re not, there is absolutely no point in reading the rest of this article, as the ability to accomplish stillness of your body is [...]

In the previous article, we were in the shower together. You’ll recall the simple technique started out with getting into gratitude by taking a shower. Starting your practice in the physical world, with something you can easily have appreciation for: your body. After all, appreciate all your body does for you. Consider all of the high level functions it conducts while you are not aware of them. How many times a day do you actually have to stop and remember to make your heart beat? How often do you have to give conscious commands to continue digesting? Or breathing? (More [...]

“Awareness.” “Consciousness.” “Being in the ‘Moment.’” And finally, “Mindfulness.” One of the highest pursuits of human endeavor promises to lead to this elusive, exalted state. Some people spend a lifetime and never even catch a glimpse. Others may catch only the most fleeting of openings. And only the lucky few enter and remain in a state of enlightenment. There are as many paths as there are seekers on the path. It is an individual search that leads to the same place. For some, that is “nowhere.” For the lucky few, it’s “now here.” What a difference a space makes. And [...]

“Massive Fail!” Your mind shouts out at you. “Aren’t you supposed to be working on being a better person?” It continues. “Just look at you. You’re losing your temper again. You’re sitting in judgment again. You’re (insert your particular mental poison here) again!! Idiot!” You realize you have been lost in a mental play… taken away from the present, and into that hell of the imagined reality. Perhaps reliving a past event. Perhaps projecting a fantasy of “I shoulda woulda coulda.” Then despair sets in… again… But don’t fret for too long. It’s the nature of this treacherous path you [...]

The Sneaky Little Energy Thief Called Anxiety As the day goes on, you notice yourself becoming more and more exhausted and more than a little uncomfortable.  Quickly thinking back over the day, you can’t seem to find anything that you have done that is particularly tiring.  And the stress of the day hasn’t been more than normal. Perhaps you’ve been noticing the pattern of becoming tired without a “reason” lately. There could be lots of reasons. Like apps running in the background on your smartphone or laptop, there may be an insipid little energy drain (or several of them) “running” [...]

Commuter Rage Opens A Door To Awareness

The man's heart swelled with rage. He struggled against the cutting remark that crouched, ready to strike out.  And he lost that struggle.  “You asshole.  I can't believe your so stupid!” he grumbled at the man in front of him. He seethed as he waited for the train to arrive, a lump burning in his chest. He felt he had been the victim of an injustice.  Only steps away from getting in the line, another commuter sneakily sprinted two steps ahead and edged the now-angered man back in line. The relative position didn't matter.  The act of someone sneaking in [...]
